A video without sound can be linked to a beautiful vase without flowers in it. The beauty of one is brought to life by the presence of the other. In production, sound is the icing on the cake that brings the entire product to perfection. For maximum effect, specific sounds can be designed to compliment a video.

Hence, sound design is an art and practice of creating soundtracks for a variety of needs. It is the process of recording, acquiring, manipulating and generating audio elements. It is employed in filmmaking, television production, theatre, sound recording and reproduction, live performance sound-art, post-production and video game software development.

Sound design is a very important artistic component of production and it requires a level of imagination from a sound designer to create sound effects and not just record them.

The benefits of sound design cannot be overemphasized in the film industry and we’ll be highlighting a few.

1. Sound dictates mood in a film; a properly designed sound provokes an emotional reaction from an audience when used to suit a particular scene.
2. Sound conveys realism; sound design doesn’t just tell stories but it teleports us inside the story. It’s the immersive factor of sound that allows videos to be truly experienced and messages to be delivered with more purpose.
3. Signature; sound design puts the signature of the persons involved in it; music composers, sound effects directors etc. Certain sounds are designed in such a way that by hearing them you can easily decipher who made it.
4. Sound design can be used for voice overs and helps with dialogues; if you are working with motion graphics, you may not have any talking characters. If you do, recording clear, clean dialogue is essential. You want the audience to understand what your characters are saying.
