Location scouting is an essential part in the pre-production stage of every filmmaking process. It is a vital part that must be taken seriously, the slightest mistake in location scouting can throw off an entire shoot.
What is location scouting?
Location scouting involves looking for a suitable place to shoot, it could be pictures, movies, tv shows, commercials or music videos. Location scouting doesn’t necessarily involve outdoor areas only, it can also be an indoor space.
Oftentimes ,once the scriptwriter, producer and director agree on the kind of scenery they want for the different parts of their work, the location manager alongside a team of location scouts set out in search of spectacular and interesting locations before production commences.
Before you decide to go scouting for the perfect location for any film production, there are a few things to put into consideration;
- The distance of the location from the cast and crew to ensure punctuality.
- The overall aesthetic of the location as it must fit into the context of your plot.
- The financial cost of production and available budget.
- The available logistics at the location; toilets, restaurants, charging units etc.
- The availability of electrical power or feasibility of bringing in generators for lights and electrical equipment.
- Available and adequate lighting for indoor locations and suitable weather conditions for outdoor locations.
- Legal permission and access from the location owner and neighbours, local government and law enforcement.
All of these are factors that can either contribute to the success or failure of a shoot if given proper consideration. It is safe to say that the business of filmmaking is one that requires knowledge, mastery and skill.
