The term burnout is a word commonly associated with an emotional and psychological feeling. It is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.

Burnout occurs when one feels overwhelmed, emotionally drained and unable to meet constant demands. It is characterised by; exhaustion, cynicism otherwise known as less identification with your job and feelings of reduced professional ability.

As a post producer, have you ever felt this way? and would you say you handled it well? We’ll be highlighting ways to fight burnout  that come with post production.

As we all know, post production can be braintasking and pretty much overwhelming. There are times you lose interest in a project you’re working on or are too tired to continue because you feel stuck. You’re not alone.

These steps will guide you in dealing with post production burnout.

  1. Set routines, coping strategies and habits that will take care of your mental health and wellbeing. This way you will keep yourself feeling renewed and excited to do your work and not feel overwhelmed.
  2. Make an attempt to keep up with the things that introduced you to the industry in the first place. This will keep you engaged, charged and obsessed with your goals.
  3. Develop the habit of being self aware. It is key to keep track of your stress level before it takes a toll on you. Be proactive in managing a shift in your attitude and behaviours.
  4. Join a group of fellow filmmakers around you or create one either physical or online. Being in a space like this will help you stay connected and accountable to yourself and professionals like you. Bear in mind that talking is one of the fastest ways to calm your nervous system.
  5. Create a balance; make sure that when your energy is used, it is also regained. Set aside time for self care and activities that make you feel happy. Always remember to take a break and charge your battery.
  6. Set boundaries and take your own advice because in the end, only us truly know what works best for us.
