A common question among budding cinematographers is always, “How do I get my videos to look more cinematic?” .
One would ask , what exactly is a cinematic look? What makes a film or video befitting to be described as cinematic?
A cinematic look is a term that suggests good composition, nice lighting, smooth camera movement and perfect angles, great choice of sound, clean editing, good use of depth of field, colour correction and contrast, all in one video. Essentially, the primary goal of a cinematic look is making your end product look professional, sharp and high-quality regardless of the medium, be it a mobile phone or professional camera.

1. ) Create Depth; creating depth means that you have one point of focus when filming and the rest of the objects are a bit out of focus, giving your work a 3D feel. Shooting with a shallow depth of field is an easy go-to for a more cinematic look.
2.) Good lighting; the importance of good lighting cannot be overemphasized in the filmmaking industry. We encourage you to go for the best and most desirable light you can lay your hands on when filming.
3.) Color correction and contrast; color correction makes for a large part in creating a cinematic look. You have to get your contrast right and separate your points of interest, make them pop . Keep in mind that colour gives a slightly different feel, tone or emotion.
4.) Take control of your camera; taking control of your camera is essentially controlling your hand movement and getting your angles and composition right. A gimbal or tripod can be used in getting a seamless movement.
Above all, bear in mind that telling a story in the most visually appropriate way is the essence of cinematography. In the end, this is what makes a film truly cinematic.
